Historical substance, connected future:

One of the key challenges at Villa Eloise was to integrate modern AV technology seamlessly into the historic building while preserving the visual integrity and structural character of its beautifully restored architecture. With this in mind, Puparo was tasked for the complete system design – from the planning and programming of audio technology, coordination of the cabling and installation on site, to the DSP configuration and final commissioning.

Different rooms, different requirements

From historic halls to common areas and guest rooms to gardens and terraces, Villa Eloise offers a diverse range of rooms and usage scenarios. That’s why Puparo didn’t develop a uniform, overarching sound concept for the entire property, but planned each zone based on its task(s): subtle background music in the general areas, clear and intelligible speech during conferences and ceremonies, higher sound pressure level in the event areas, and the most uniform possible coverage of the outdoor areas. The historic halls and terraces required careful attention due to their significantreverberation times and the need to maintain excellent speech intelligibility.

Speakers were chosen to meet the diverse requirements: CFL In-ceiling Loudspeakers blend seamlessly into areas where the technology is deliberately kept visually discreet. DQOR Installation Loudspeakers are used both indoors and outdoors, thus enabling a uniform design language across different zones and rooms. COGS Garden Speakers provide sound coverage throughout the gardens, while MAUI Column PA Systems – ranging from the compact MAUI 5 GO to the iconic MAUI P900 by Porsche Design Studio – are used wherever events and live music demand an increased level of mobility and flexibility, including more power headroom. In addition, product aesthetics also played an important role during the decision-making process.

Central and decentralised signal processing

The NMP Audio Matrices are the backbone of the audio architecture in Villa Eloise. One NMP 32 and several NMP 8 units handle central signal processing and routing, including distribution to the various areas. The DIO 44 Dante interfaces, which are distributed throughout the building, connect the various areas to the audio network and enable audio signals to be processed and delivered exactly where they are needed. PoE switches, Dante connections, and local amplifiers form a distributed infrastructure, while the analogue signal paths were kept short. This approach is particularly beneficial in a historic building: Shorter analogue cable paths mean less elaborate cable routes and therefore less intervention in the historical building fabric. For network connectivity, Puparo opted for concealed Adam Hall Cat6A cables and visually discreet mounting solutions to preserve the villa’s architectural character.

Depending on the zone, different LD systems solutions were used for the sound amplification. The bandwidth ranges from IMA 60 and IMA 120 Mixer Amplifiers to compact AMP 106 T and AMP 205 Amplifiers from the TICA Series up to IPA 424 T DSP Power Amplifiers with X-EDAI Dante Expansion Cards. This allows the amplifier power to be tailored to the requirements of each area and speaker.

Central control via QUESTRA

The LD Systems QUESTRA Design and Management Platform provides the foundation for the audio installation and makes central monitoring and audio infrastructure control possible. While the NMP matrices take over routing and DSP processing and the DIO 44 interfaces distribute the Dante signals in the network, QUESTRA combines the different components and zones into an overall system from the user’s point of view.

The staff of Villa Eloise access the most important audio and control functions on a daily basis via two QTP 8 Touchscreen Panels and one iPad. This allows them to select audio sources, adjust volume levels, and access predefined presets. LD Systems RSMP and MSMP Media Players complement the system with flexible playback options – from background music to Internet radio to separate playlists for the individual areas.

Simple in everyday life, flexible for tomorrow

Since it was put into operation, the system has impressed with its sound quality, reliable operation, and ease of use. According to Puparo Music, the Villa Eloise’s owner family particularly values its ease of use in everyday operation as well as the ability to manage the numerous audio zones easily and flexibly. At the same time, the installation is not designed as a stand-alone system. Thanks to the decentralised Dante architecture, the NMP Matrices, and the higher-level QUESTRA control, further areas can be integrated with relative ease. Corresponding extensions for additional zones are already planned.

Technology that takes a back seat to the architecture

Villa Eloise meets two requirements that appear worlds apart at first glance: the protection and preservation of an elaborately restored historical building and the technical flexibility of a multi-use event location. Puparo found a solution that adapts to the villa in terms of space, aesthetics, and functionality by combining decentralised Dante infrastructure, precisely coordinated speaker and amplifier solutions, and QUESTRA as the central link. The technology takes a back seat, while the architecture takes centre stage – and still provides the necessary headroom when the stately aristocratic palace transforms into a modern event location.
