LD Systems MAILA XXL at Festa Romana on Mallorca

Once a year, the historic old town of Alcúdia in Mallorca is transformed into a journey back into the ancient past: at Festa Romana, Roman-inspired market stands, crafts, parades and shows are complemented by an extensive music programme. For more than two decades, this open-air event has been one of the fixtures on the town’s calendar of events. In 2026, the festival was organised on a much larger scale and comprised three stages in total. The Mallorcan event technology service provider Modul Sound was responsible for one of these stages and used an LD Systems MAILA XXL system for the sound. The other stage was set-up by Alcudia Luz, and they have trusted in MAILA XXL too.

“We have now used MAILA at many major events and have had very good experiences with it,” explains Patrick Fossati, founder and CEO of Modul Sound. At Festa Romana, the challenge was to provide uniform sound coverage across both stages, each accommodating around 1,500 visitors and measuring approximately 35 to 40 metres in depth. “We opted for a MAILA XXL configuration because it offers us long ranges and wide coverage – whilst delivering outstanding clarity at the same time.”

A complete MAILA XXL system was used for each of the two stages. The flown arrays, comprising MAILA COL column modules and MAILA SAT array satellites, were supplemented by MAILA SUB 2×15" bandpass subwoofers for the low-frequency foundation. This provided Modul Sound with a powerful and at the same time slimline system that delivered even coverage across the extensive audience areas.

“People look at the system and ask if that really is the complete PA. When they hear it, they’re even more surprised.”

Clear and linear

For Fossati, the combination of range and consistent sound is one of the great strengths of MAILA: “The system has almost hi-fi-like clarity. It makes practically no difference where you stand – playback remains very linear.” The compact dimensions of the line array also often takes people by surprise: “People look at the system and ask if that really is the complete PA. When they hear it, they’re even more surprised.”

The MAILA XXL also impressed with its fast response and the necessary depth and pressure in the low-frequency range. At the same time, the directional dispersion enabled a significant reduction in the bass energy to the sides and behind the system, which is particularly beneficial for transparent sound onstage.

Quick setup

In addition to sound quality, the time required to set up the equipment is also a crucial factor for a rental service provider such as Modul Sound. Here, MAILA users benefit from e.g. the modular and cable-free design of the MAILA arrays. “The system can be set up by just one person if necessary,” Fossati confirms. “When I’m focused on my work and know what needs to be done, I can get the complete system up and running in about ten minutes.”

The team uses the MAILA app for configuration. On their tablet, they can e.g. set the height of the system, the angles of the individual array elements and the level, and make initial EQ adjustments where necessary. “The app makes a lot of things much easier. You don’t need to connect a computer and you can work directly on the tablet – it’s just so much quicker.”

Flexible and scalable

For Modul Sound, another key factor in product selection was the modularity and scalability of the MAILA concept. “We can use the same system for an event of 100 people or scale it up for 1,500 people," says Fossati. “This makes our work much easier.” Modul Sound has already tested just how far MAILA can be scaled at other events. For example, systems have been used for events with up to 3000 visitors, supplemented by additional MAILA components as a delay system.

The range is also not limited to certain music styles or event formats. From corporate events to jazz and rock to electronic music, Patrick Fossati sees hardly any limitations: “You can actually play anything on it. In my view, the system sets hardly any limits.”
